This Military Medal Gazette for operations on the Somme 1st September 1916 to the 21st of October 1916 including capture of Thiepval, Regina Trench, Bayonet Trench and Delville Wood.


Bandsman John George Townsend landed in France with the 1st Battalion the Leicestershire Regiment on the 9th of September 1914 he was awarded the Military Medal in late 1916, as a Bandsman presumably acting as a Stretcher Bearer, and died of wounds on the 2nd of May 1917. He is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France in Plot IV Row B Grave 71.
