A Boer War and Great War Gallipoli Campaign Group of 5 awarded to Private Arthur Middleton 1st, 2nd and 4th Battalions Northamptonshire Regiment comprising Queen's South Africa Medal, 2nd type ghost dates, 3 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Belmont, (2570 Pte. A. Middleton, 2nd Northampton Regt), impressed naming, King's South Africa Medal, two clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, (2570 Pte. A. Middleton Northampton, Regt), impressed naming, 1914‑15 Star, (2489 Pte. A. Middleton. North'N. R.), 1914‑1920 British War and Victory Medals, (2489 Pte. A. Middleton. North'N. R.), Silver War Badge no (345832) (see notes), toned very fine (6).



Arthur Middleton joined the Northamptonshire Regiment on the 31st of October 1889 aged 18 years 2 months a shoemaker by trade. He stated he was serving at the time of enlistment with the 4th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment Militia. He served with the 1st and 2nd Battalions between 1889 until 1895. He Re‑joined on the 16th of April 1897 and served in South Africa from the 21st of October 1899 to the 17th of August 1902. He was discharged from the Army on the 23rd of August 1902. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with 3 clasps (papers confirm) and the King's South Africa Medal.


He re‑joined the 4th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on the 15th of September 1914 and served with the 4th until the 16th of October 1917, serving in the Mediterranean Theatre the 1/4th landing at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, on the 15th of August 1915 evacuated from Gallipoli in December remaining for the rest of the War in Egypt and Palestine thereafter. Arthur Middleton's papers show him arriving in Theatre on the 29th of July 1915 and leaving on the 12th of June 1919 returning Home on the 25th of July 1919, the day after he was demobilised. His papers state 1914‑15 Star, War and Victory and Four Blue (Overseas) Chevrons. He transferred in Theatre to the Labour Corps on the 16th of October 1917, at the age of 46. He served in Egypt and Palestine with the Labour Corps thereafter. He was discharged with Silver War Badge 472606 due to sickness.
