A Boer War and Great War, Royal Field Artillery, 2nd Battle of Ypres Casualty Group of 6 awarded to Driver Mark Mee, 96th Battery, 19th Brigade RFA who was Killed in Action on the 25th of April 1915 comprising, Queen's South Africa Medal, 1899‑1902, 3rd type, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (2178 Dvr: M. Mee. 14th Bty: R.F.A.), impressed naming, King's South Africa Medal, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, (2178 Dvr: M. Mee. R.F.A.), impressed naming, 1914‑15 Star, (32197 Dvr: M. Mee. R.F.A.), 1914‑1920 British War and Victory Medals, (32197 Dvr. M. Mee. R.A.), with related Memorial Plaque (Mark Mee), the first two with contact marks and edge bruising, very fine (6)




Mark Mee was born in Derbyshire and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in November 1899, aged 20 years,having previously been a member of the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion of the Derbyshire Regiment.


Active service followed in South Africa with the 14th Battery, R.F.A. between October 1899 and October 1902, and he transferred to the Army Reserve in the rank of Driver in January 1908.


Mee was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities and was killed in action in the 2nd Battle of Ypres on 25 April 1915, just 3 days after the first Gas Attack, while serving in 96th Battery, Royal Field Artillery whilst firing in support of the Canadians in St Julien who had taken the brunt of the Gas; Mark's body was not located after the War and he is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, near Hainaut, Belgium.


Sold with two original photographs of a Gun and Gun Detachment, copied Medal Index Card, copied page from War Diary other related copy research and Commonwealth War Graves Commission details and modern photograph of his name on the Memorial and 4 pages of copied Service papers.
