A September 1914 Casualty Group of four awarded to Private Alfred Downes, 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment, who Died of Wounds on the 20th of September 1914 comprising, 1914 Star, (6653 Pte A. Downs. 2/Essex R.) note spelling of surname, 1914‑1920 British War and Victory Medals, (6653 Pte. A. Downes. Essex R.), Memorial Plaque (Alfred Downes), toned fine (4).


Private Alfred Downes landed in France with the 2nd Battalion the Essex Regiment on the 22nd of
August 1914, he is also entitled to the Aug‑Nov clasp. He has two Medal Index Cards one for the 1914 Star with the surnamed spelled Downs and a note saying incorrect surname, see "Downes". His card is annotated Died of Wounds. Alfred was the son of George and Rosetta Downes of 5, Village Street, West Ham, London he was 33 years old when he died, he is remembered on the La Ferté‑Sous‑Jouarre Memorial.
