Scotland, William II (1694-1702), silver Forty Shillings, 1695, laureate and draped bust right, value 40 below, legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS DEI. GRATIA., no stop after King's name, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, with an escutcheon of the Lion of Nassau, no lozenges in Dutch arms, date in legend, MAG. BRIT. FRA. ET. HIB. REX. 1695., edge inscribed in raised letters, .PROTEGIT. ET. ORNAT. .ANNO. REGNI. OCTAVO., weight 18.32g (Burns 1 fig. 1074; S.5680). Toned, good fine and a scarce variety.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "William by the grace of God," and on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," lastly around the edge as "It protects and adorns, in the seventh year of the reign."
