William III (1694-1702), gold Guinea, 1699, second laureate head right, legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III. DEI. GRA., rev. crowned cruciform shields, plain sceptres in angles, Lion of Nassau at centre, date either side of top crown, legend and toothed border surrounding, .MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REX., weight 8.22g (EGC 419 R2; S.3461). Once mounted, cleaned, otherwise about fine with clear details, particularly the reverse, an extremely rare date seldom encountered in any grade.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as "William the third by the grace of God" on the obverse, and "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" on the reverse.

The gold output of the Mint for calendar year 1699 was £141,377, the third lowest for gold production in the seven years of dates in this reign. Although it is unknown how the output was broken down between the gold denominations nor how long a date on a coin die would have lasted into a following calendar year, it is clear that the Guinea – both with and without elephant and castle below bust – is far less commonly encountered than Five Guineas of this year.
Estimate: £800-1,200
