Victoria (1837-1901), silver Sixpence, 1887, withdrawn type issued for the Golden Jubilee, Jubilee crowned bust left, rare variety with J.E.B. on truncation, legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITT: REGINA F: D:, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms within garter, Old French motto surrounding, HONI. SOIT. QUI MAL. Y. PENSE., date below (Bull 3267 R3; ESC 1752B; S. 3928). Extremely fine example of a rare variant, light toning around the legend and motto with faint hairline scratching in obverse field. Strong details remain with good residual mint lustre in places.

The Latin legend on the obverse translates as "Victoria by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith". The Old French motto on the reverse garter translates as "Shame on he who thinks ill of it".

This variety with JEB on truncation is assumed to be some form of early pattern.
Estimate: £60-80
