MS62 BN | George III (1760-1820), copper Twopence, 1797, 'Cartwheel' type, laureate and draped bust right, Latin legend incuse on raised border surrounding both sides, GEORGIUS III. D: G. REX., rev. Britannia seated left on rock with trident and shield, holding olive branch, ship sailing right to left, SOHO raised on rock below, BRITANNIA on raised border above, date below, weight 55.68g (Peck 1077; S.3776). A very pleasing example of this iconic heavy weight issue, unusually well preserved with no significant edge knocks, conservatively graded by NGC as MS62 BN.

NGC Certification 6322327-001.

The Latin legends translate as on obverse "George III, by the grace of God, King" and on the reverse "of the Britons."

The largest copper coin ever struck in the UK when two ounces of copper was worth a Twopence face value, such large pieces were struck using the steam powered machinery introduced to the Soho Mint by James Watt and William Murdoch. They were struck in Matthew Boulton's Soho manufactory in Birmingham.
