With the mines of Laurion lost and their territory and resources depleted by the cost of the war with Sparta, the Athenians resorted to a plated coinage. This was officially withdrawn after the government was re-established in 403/2 BC. The present example is a highly important relic of the Peloponnesian War.
Estimate: £150-250
