WORLD COINS. GREAT BRITAIN. Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567), Francis and Mary. Silver Jetton or Counter, dated 1553, Paris mint, 3.77g. Crowned FM monogram between two stars, linear circle surrounding, DILIGITE. IVSTICIAM. 1553 abbreviated legend for "Observe Justice", beaded border surrounding.Rev. Crowned Scottish Arms, linear circle around, DELICIE. DNI. COR. HVMILE. abbreviated legend for "An humble heart is the delight of the Lord" (Burns volume II p.344-346 and plate LXVI/916; MI 65/5). Good very fine, toned and pleasing.
The Dauphin Francis and Mary Queen of Scots were not married until 1558 and the early date of this piece renders it medallic rather than anything to do with coinage. Medallic Illustrations theorises that perhaps such Jettons were used within the Royal houselhold.

Estimate: US$ 1,200
