This very important dynastic issue refers to perhaps one of the most significant issues facing Augustus throughout the Principate, that of the succession.Augustus had originally intended his nephew Marcellus to succeed him. However, following the death of Marcellus in 23 B.C., Augustus's trusted general, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, was considered as heir.Augustus additionally adopted his grandsons (the sons of Agrippa) Gaius and Lucius, in 17 B.C. to further strengthen the future of the imperial position. However, following Agrippa's death in 12 B.C. and the later deaths of both Gaius and Lucius, Augustus was eventually faced with the need to consider his stepson Tiberius as successor.Tiberius was married to Augustus's daughter Julia and was adopted by the emperor, eventually succeeding him in A.D. 14.This coin is a statement of Tiberius's legitimacy to the throne as Augustus's adopted son and heir, and the portraits of both men are symbolic of the newly established Julio-Claudian dynasty.
Part of the Aurora Collection.

Estimate: US$ 30,000
