RUSSIAN COINS. Re-coinage Series of Paul I. 5 Kopecks 17(9)3 EM. Edge-5. 45.44 gm. Bit 101, B 10 (S), Uzd 2858 (S). The second to last digit of the date not struck up, the last, very weak. Double overstruck broad flan, 49.7 mm. Full cipher undertype reverse clearly visible, except for date, across eagle on obverse, the undertype with remnant of host it was originally overstruck on in margin. An intriguing coin deserving of further research. Very fine
In our opinion, the last two digits were not struck up because they were actually purposely effaced on the die. This coin has numerous similarities to the 1793 5 Kopecks without mmk. There is the possibility that Nizhny Novgorod shared its dies. This supports our theory we first published in our Mail-Bid Sale # 6, December 9-10, 1998, p. 90.
Estimate: US$ 750
