RUSSIAN. MEDALS. Nicholas I Medals. Plaquette. Silver. 72 x 101 mm. By Lavrenty [Lawrence] Avksentievich Seryakov (1824-1881). Nicholas I on his deathbed, 1855. Plaquette set into the lid of a rectangular Karelian beechwood burl box, the interior lid set with a plain silver plaque engraved 1825-1855"; the plaquette cast in high relief, the image inset in a cartouche. Nicholas lies on a pillow facing left, covered with sheets and a small icon placed upon him, signed and dated on the truncation. The interior plaquette virtually the same size, the box with seamless hinge, 185mm x 100mm x 45mm. A fascinating memento mori. The slightest damage to the box, the plaquette. Extremely fine
