Herman Epstein (1806-1867) played a leading role in constructing railroad lines between Warsaw and Vienna (1845) and Warsaw and Bromberg (1857), brokering loans from the Rothschilds in Frankfurt. Between 1857 and 1865, he was chairman of the board of both railways. Epstein was awarded hereditary patents of nobility and served as an honorary board member of the Polish Philanthropic Council.
