RUSSIAN COINS. Nicholas II, 1894-1917. Presentation Gold Coinage 37 ½ Roubles – 100 Francs 1902 *. GOLD. Bit 315 (R2), Fr 170, Sev 578 (RRR), Uzd 4212 (RRR). Modelled on the French 100 Francs, this was the highest denomination coin ever minted by Russia. A mere 225 pieces were struck to be used for presentation. In his book, "Outlines of Certain Types of Russian Coins in The Past Two Centuries" (Moscow 1904), S.I. Chizhov notes that 200 pieces were given out by Nicholas II as special gifts, with the remaining 25 coins being turned over to Grand Duke Mikhailovich. Extremely rare.
