John Shuttleworth was a prosperous Manchester cotton manufacturer, as well as religious nonconformist and Unitarian. His liberal political views found him at odds with the government following the Peterloo Massacre in 1819 and, in response, him and several others founded the Manchester Guardian. Shuttleworth was involved with the newspaper until 1824, when, after a perceived rightward shift in coverage, he helped purchase the Mancester Gazette and transform it into an even more radical organ.
