NICARAGUA. William Walker Military Script. 50 Dollars, 1856. P-S132. PMG Very Fine 30.
Dated July 29th, 1856. Now here is a neat piece of history. This note was issued as script for William Walker's military during his invasion of Nicaragua. William Walker was an American mercenary who tried invading & occupying Mexico and Central America to establish slave colonies. Walker illegally took the presidency of Nicaragua in July of 1856 with help from the Democratic Party of Nicaragua, and ruled until May 1st, 1857. Walker was forced out by a coalition of armies from Central America. Walker tried to return to Nicaragua, but was captured in Honduras after being defeated by the Costa Rican armies and executed in 1860.
This is the sole example listed on PMG's population report, and the only example we can recall handling. The primary design is in black ink with all of the issuing information/date/denomination filled in by hand. At lower left of center is a large embossed seal which reads "Dios Union Liberated Nicaragua En Centro America." PMG comments "Minor Ink Burn, Annotation". PMG Pop 1/No Others Graded
From the Paradise Collection.
