SURINAME. De Surinaamsche Bank. 10 Gulden, 1938. P-78. Fine.
Van Elmpt plate note. A rare, fully issued example of this large format 10 Gulden. A mere 20,000 examples of this type were printed, with very few fully issued examples surviving today. This is the third and last variety of this type, which has the serial numbers on the reverse and negen jahre (nine years) for the legal code. This denomination was replaced in 1941 by the smaller format ABNC printed series. This JEZ printed design is far more elegant than the ABNC note, with this type featuring four vignettes representing the local economy. At center on the reverse is a "10"counter, with a black, red and green/blue rayed design emanating from center. A classic & iconic note for the country, and incredibly difficult to locate today. For reference, although this note is not graded by PMG, their service lists just a single example on their population report. We believe that it is very possible that the issued example graded by PMG is in fact a cancelled note, unlike this fully issued one though we are not 100 percent certain. The SCWPM simply lists this type as "rare". Worthy of a premium bid, as it may be sometime before this type is offered again publicly. Restoration.
Estimate: $15000 - $17000
