The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, 1 tael, 1.1.1888, serial number 2190, grey with blue 'ONE TAEL' underprint, handsigned signature at lower left, Bank title and denomination 'SHANG HAI WEN YIN YI LIANG' in Chinese characters within borders, reverse purple, Bank arms at centre, Bank title and denomination in English,(Pick S372), PMG 30 Very Fine. One of the earliest dated 'Foreign Banks in China' available. The Hongkong Bank was likely the earliest bank to issue banknotes in China after it began operations in 1865. This one tael note is special as it is only one of very few notes bearing the 'tael' denomination and also a very early issue. No records of any issued examples on Track and Price and the SINGLE HIGHEST grade of four notes in the PMG population report (the second highest is a distant PMG 15). Exceptionally rare and in high grade considering its age. A note which will delight the collector for 'Foreign Banks in China'!.
