The star in field on Elagabalus' coins was certainly intended to represent the sun, specifically the emperor's sun god. The addition of a globe to the star on this and some other coins was probably meant to indicate this fact: this heavenly body had perceptible breadth and was not a mere point of light like an ordinary star
