Mauritius ND (1954) P-29 PMG Choice About UNC 58 25 Rupees

A rarity from the small island nation of Mauritius located in the Indian Ocean, issued prior to independence in 1968, when it was still a British colony. This is the highest denomination of this series (issued 1954 to 1967) that most collectors can hope to obtain, as the 1000 Rupees is believed to have been used for interbank purposes only and is for all intents and purposes unobtainable in issued form. This denomination was issued only with the A prefix and this example has the second signature variety of three, with the signatures of Wilson & Hurvais as Commissioners of Currency. This signature combination was first issued in 1955, which also also corrected an error that can be found in the Hindi text of the denomination on the previous signature variety. A wonderful example of this classic type and only the second example we have offered and by far the better of the two. Some minor staining must be mentioned, but these are mostly visible from the back and are fairly minimal, with the originality and strong color of the note especially worth mentioning. Not a type that is often available and very popular as such. PMG mentions "Stains".
