PLANTAGENET. Edward III. 1327-1377. AR Penny (18mm, 1.32 g, 12h). Third (florin) coinage. Class 4. London mint. Struck 1344-1351. North 1116; SCBC 1545. Near VF, metal flaw on reverse.

Ex Stanwix Hoard, Cumbria (Sotheby's, 5 October 1989), lot 889 (part of).

Unearthed between October 1986 and April 1987, the Stanwix Hoard comprised some 2,267 Edwardian silver coins. All of the coins were examined and catalogued at the British Museum and approximately 2,000 were later sold by Sotheby's after representative samples were attained by museums. The hoard was deposited during the early to mid 1350s, a time of great uncertainty, particularly in northern England due to plaque and the Second Scottish War of Independence.
