Soapstone scaraboid. Western Semitic, Hebrew(?), 8th–7th century BC. Scaraboid with two faces and bidirectional piercing. On one face: an ibex facing right; star above, plant before. On opposite: Recarved in antiquity. Faint impression of a linear man with right hand outstretched, holding bag; star to lower left. Faint traces of initial carving of a fish. Dimensions: 17x13mm. Fairly worn and chipped on side, but an interesting piece.
From the David Hendin Collection.
Such recarving was commonplace as intaglios and seals would pass from hand to hand in antiquity.
