Annam
Thieu Tri gold 3 Tien ND (1841-47), KM337, Fr-18, Sch-285, AU58 NGC. Large dragon type. A rare denomination and seemingly the rarer of the two designs with a large dragon on the obverse that fully encompasses the centers and extends to the dentils. On the reverse, the characters are also examined on a larger scale. A truly gorgeous piece with typical Annamese gold reddish-orange color that reflects the heavy alloying of gold with copper. Furthering the appeal is crimson patina that encircles the devices. No issues of any kind are apparent, and the grade actually seems rather conservative. If not the finest of the type, certainly close to it, and unquestionably an exciting opportunity for the specialist. For accuracy's sake, we note that the slab carries the incorrect attribution. From the collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation
