Austria
Salzburg. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau gold 5 Ducats ND (1587-1612), Fr-unlisted, Probszt-unlisted, BR-1531, MS62 NGC. A most impressive specimen, struck to beautiful medallic specifications with an extremely appealing high-relief bust of Wolf Dietrich on the obverse and ornate arms, set against somewhat concave mirrored fields, on the reverse. A fascinating type that given its extreme rarity, has eluded numismatic classification in most standard references. Upon searching however, we were able to locate a single offering of the type by Kunker in January of 2008. Close inspection of both this specimen and the Kunker example confirms similar grades, with the present likely being slightly finer with fewer central marks. Given the combination of obvious rarity and imposing design, we don't hesitate to proclaim this example as at the the pinnacle of desirability, and as such, we anticipate spirited bidding from not only the Austrian specialist, but also the connoisseur of World rarities.

Estimate: 60000-80000 USD
