Flanders. Louis II de Mâle (1346-84) gold Lion heaumé d'or 1365-70, Ghent mint, Fr-157, Delm-460, AU58 NGC. LV | DOVICVS : DЄI o GRΛ : COM' o Ƶ : DnS : FLΛnDR | IЄ, Helmed and seated lion to left within a Gothic stall; FLΛnDRЄS in exergue / + BЄИЄDICTVS : QVI : VЄИIT : IИ : ИOMIИЄ : DOMIИI, cross fleurée with F|L|Λ|n in quarters and D' in center. Simply beautiful. The strike is exacting and the near-fully lustrous surfaces bear no noteworthy marks or abrasions. A very faint wave runs the diameter of the coin vertically, but does not distract from the overall eye-appeal. This type is unusual in that it is an original Flemish design rather than an imitation of a French issue. From the collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation

Estimate: 4500-5500 USD
