Republic 2000 Reis 1896, KM498, MS62 NGC. Steel grayish toning with a strong strike, and thus a very appealing specimen. A popular three-year type very difficult to locate in high grades (and with most of those few high grade specimens dated 1897). Although fairly large mintage figures are reported, those are misleading as most of the issue was subsequently melted. This is by far the rarest date, and especially elusive in this lovely condition. The example in the Paulistana collection (Heritage Auctions 4 /2010 lot 20592) was AU and hammered at $8,000.
