People's Republic Unicorn gold Proof 500 Yuan 1996, KM949, Fr-B101, Proof 67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Mintage: 108. A popular series as a result of the Unicorn theme with obverse-reverse juxtaposition between the illustrated Eastern and Western styles being wonderfully charming. The penultimate date in the series, the present specimen remains wonderfully preserved with deep frost on the central devices and legends and wide rims that attractively frame the design. Research yields the two most recent auction appearances of this type came in September of 2012 - both examples bringing approximately $52,000. Given the scant mintage, and the relatively infrequent appearance of examples on the market, we can only anticipate a similarly strong response to this beautiful low-mintage rarity.
