Republic Souvenir Peso 1897, KMXM2. MS65 NGC. Gem Uncirculated with very attractive old toning, and satiny surfaces. Only 858 pieces struck between July 8 and July 18, 1897, of which 30 were subsequently destroyed on the following September 17. The close date/star below variety, with the "M" initial (for Martiny) under the palm on the reverse. Actually, the first circulation type struck (instead of the "PAT. 97." variety), as can be concluded from the detailed article presented by Emilio Ortiz at the ANS' 1999 COAC. Very rare in this select grade.
