Ras Tafari (Haile Selassie) Elevation to Regent gold Medal EE1917 (1917), Paris mint, Gill-RT11var., AU Details - Damaged. 50.25gm. Plain Edge. By M. Dammann. An excessively rare medal that was struck on the elevation of Ras Tafari to regent. Most of the medals of Ethiopia were used at one time or another as a decorative adornment or talisman and the present example, the heaviest gold striking of any Ethiopian type that we have encountered, is no exception with light handling over most of the surfaces and likely evidence of a mount on the reverse at six o'clock that has been disguised by smoothing portions of the edge and much of the area in the exergue. Still, an extremely import piece for any Ethiopian specialist and comparable in notoriety to the gold Ethiopian Airplane medal that was sold in our January 2012 auction for $26,875.
Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
