THESSALY. Orthe. Ca. 350 BC. Æ chalkous (14mm, 3.03 gm, 5h). Head of Athena to right, wearing created Attic helmet, with raised earflap, ornamented with serpent and tendril / Ο - Ρ / Θ - Ι, upright trident within olive wreath. Rogers 423 ff. Traité IV 595 variant (legend not retrograde). Rare. Clear strike with a splendid obverse. Dark green patina. Reverse weakly struck, otherwise, Extremely Fine. Ex BCD Thessaly Collection (Nomos AG, 11 May 2011), lot 1219.The Nomos catalog features this note from the collector concerning this piece: "This is clearly the first issue of Orthe: it is notable that it is quite similar to the later silver coinage of Pharsalos and bears a head of Athena in an Attic helmet. The following issues of Orthe copy the head of Athena on Alexander's gold coins from Macedonian mints and, thus, date to the last quarter of the 4th century, at the earliest. "
