EGYPT. Alexandria. Nero-Antoninus Pius (AD 54-160). Intact hoard of BI (and Æ?) coins. Coins are fused together in a large, roughly conical mass roughly 6 X 9 inches (15 X 24 cm), with a roughly 2.5 X 2.25 inch (63 X 58 mm) section of the original terracotta containment vessel still attached. Weighing 14.5 pounds (6577 grams), indicating the presence of about 500 coins. All exterior coins covered (and fused together) by a thick, green, mineralized patina. One coin has been removed and cleaned, revealing a corroded Alexandrian BI tetradrachm of Hadrian RY 20 (Emmet 878). Identification of visible coins on the exterior is quite difficult as most details are obscured by encrustation and patination; however, while most coins appear to be BI tetradrachms, a few smaller denomination bronze coins (hemidrachms / diobols) seem to be present. Coins of Nero, Vespasian, and Aelius Caesar are discernable, leading one to speculate on a burial date sometime in the Antonine era. A rare opportunity to acquire a large group of coins in the same condition as they emerged from the ground!
