Britannicus Caesar (died AD 55). Orichalcum sestertius (35mm, 25.76 gm, 6h). Uncertain Thracian mint, AD 51. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG F BRITANNICVS, bareheaded, draped bust of Britannicus right / S - C, Mars advancing left, holding spear and shield. RIC p. 130 note. CBN Claudius 287. Cohen 1. RCV 1909. Very rare, particularly so with right-facing portrait! Dark green / olive patina over somewhat pitted surfaces. Very Fine / Fine. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 81 (20 May 2009), lot 992; Gemini IV (8 January 2008), lot 397; subsequently cleaned and retoned. The coinage of Britannicus is limited to a handful of provincial issues and this rare and rather mysterious sestertius type, likely struck at a Balkan or Bithynian mint circa AD 50-54. Although the fabric and style is provincial, the legends are in Latin and the formula S C indicates it was authorized by the Senate of Rome. The variety with a right-facing portrait, seen here, is much rarer than the left-facing type.
