Zeno, Eastern Roman Emperor, (AD 474-491). AV solidus (20mm, 4.44 gm, 6h). Constantinople (or Western mint?), second reign, AD 476-491. D N ZENO PERP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder and shield / VICTORI-A AVGGG, Victory standing left, holding long cross; star in right field; ΓA (sic!) /CONOB. Cf. RIC X 927-8 (shortened reverse inscription ending in T and officina letter). Seemingly an unrecorded variant with two officina letters! Graffito in obverse field, scratch and pock mark on reverse, otherwise Good Very Fine. While this coin stylistically appears to be a normal Zeno solidus of the Constantinople mint, it has a double officina letter at the end of the reverse inscription (AVGGG ΓΑ). No such issues are listed in RIC X for Constantinople, although some Western mint (Rome and Ravenna) have doubled officina letters and/or spurious letters or symbols. This indicates it may be a Western solidus issued by the Ostrogothic regime under Odovacer or Theodoric, in the name of Zeno.
