Constantine IV Pogonatus (AD 668-685). AV solidus (19mm, 4.45 gm, 6h). Constantinople, AD 681-685. P COИST-N-ATS PPA, fine-style helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, with short beard, holding spear over shoulder and shield on left arm / VICTORA AVGЧ, cross potent on three steps; Є / CONOB. Sear 1157. DOC II 12e. Well struck and lustrous. Choice Mint State. Toward the end of the reign of Constantine IV, an exceptionally talented engraver began producing dies with a quality of portraiture not seen for two centuries. However talented an artist he may have been, however, his literacy was marginal, as coin legends remained badly garbled.
