Great Britain
Charles II pattern gold Broad 1662, by Thomas Simon, plain edge, North-2780 (rare), KM-Pn32, portrait facing left, royal shield sharply rectangular with date above, reverse legend being the old familiar FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA ("United kingdoms flourish"), signed by the engraver with a sideways "S" beneath the bust. This excellent example has been graded AU Details "Mount Removed" by NGC, and indeed the edge is partially polished, but the coin itself is exceptional, having intense mirrored luster on the obverse, showing some normal, light hairlines for a coin of this era, and great sharpness of design although the king's bust bears some mint-made adjustments. The reverse field is littered with numerous tiny abrasions and raised dots caused by a rusted die. All things considered, this is a fairly choice example of one of a number of patterns, and similar hammered pieces in gold made to circulate (S-3301/3306), created during the early Restoration, 1660-62, some dated, some not, and most today badly impaired or damaged. How many pattern Broads ever show up this nice?

Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
