George IV gold Proof £5 1826, S-3797, KM702, WR-213 (R3), Bare Head, Septimo raised lettered edge, very rare, PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, a splendid Gem Proof with a few stray wispy hairlines but these are meaningless compared to the full proof impression which produced intimate details of the design, both the king's huge portrait and his elegant royal shield on the reverse side being in frosted contrast to the gleaming reflectivity of the fields, which are like still pools of water, smooth and as close to flawless as this cataloguer has seen on this type, the rims sharp and unmarked, the raised letters and stops on the edge all crisp, and the color -- oh, the color! -- an incredibly rich gold with reddish iridescent hues. This glorious specimen approaches perfection. Nothing like it seems to have appeared on the international auction circuit in recent years. Mintage is unknown but was between 150 and 225 pieces, all made for the special Proof Sets of 1826. Truly pristine coins are the ultimate numismatic treasures. This is one of them!

Estimate: 40000-60000 USD
