Great Britain
Edward the Confessor (1042-66) Penny ND, S-1182, North-828, Hammer Cross type, moneyer Iocetel of York, MS63 PCGS, a fabulous example with a bold image of the king, crowned and holding the scepter of office before him, the reverse showing all four pieces of the hammer-cross image in bold detail, with crisp legends, all struck upon a full flan of good metal having high rims. Still-intense silvery luster is coated with a gorgeous gray oxidation, or patina, which if left undisturbed will forever lock in the quality beneath it. The classic Anglo-Saxon design of the reverse shows a short cross voided with each limb ending in an inward-curved "hammer top" -- the four pieces forming a broken circle. The large annulet in one angle of the cross is a mark of the York Mint. The Saxons were Christianized barbarians bearing the blood-lines of heathen Vikings from Sweden, Jutland, and other far reaches of Norse lands. The voided cross was one of their symbols, and here it is boldly imposed upon their standard coin, this style minted from 1059-62.

Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
