Great Britain
Cromwell gold Broad 1656, S-3225, AU55 NGC, an attractive example of this classic issue, valued at 20 Shillings when issued, the dies by Thomas Simon, this piece showing even wear across the portrait and slight wear on the reverse shield, the fields showing numerous mostly light abrasions but retaining luster. Clearly, despite the short-lived actual issue of this coinage, and the ire directed at the deceased Protector following his death, on the part of Royalists, who often accused anyone who retained Cromwell's image (on his coins) of being enemies of the Crown, this coin continued to be used and fully valued as money for years afterward. It was a coin of such intrinsic value that only aristocrats were likely to encounter one. The Lord Protector might have suffered much abuse after his demise in September 1658 but this, one of his finest coins, was largely spared. From the collection of Donald E.
