George III copper pattern Wreath Dollar 1811, or 5 Shillings & 6 Pence, ESC-206 (listed as Scarce), medal-rotation die alignment, PR65 BN NGC, truly a beautiful example of this pattern made during the Napoleonic Wars on order of the Bank of England, which contemplated a new coinage during the period of fluctuating silver prices. However, the war came to its inevitable conclusion, silver prices stabilized, there was no longer a need for a Crown valued at sixpence over the standard, and the entire effort was abandoned. This piece was engraved by I. Philip (his signature "I · P." appears beneath the bow-tie on reverse). The regal coinage re-commenced with the so-called New Coinage in 1816 and the first of the new Crowns appeared just seven years after this pattern was minted (we offer a wonderful 1818 crown in this auction). Of course originally, 203 years ago, this coin was copper red. Today its surfaces look like fine mahogany furniture, cured by time and still precious. If you are thinking of adding one of these patterns to your collection, here is a really fine example.

Estimate: 1000-1500 USD
