George IV Proof Crown 1826, S-3806, KM699, Bare Head, raised SEPTIMO edge, rare, PR64 Cameo PCGS; as issued in the proof sets of this year, an exceptionally fine specimen showing only a few tiny ticks in the metal; the portrait is rounded and bold in all details with a light cameo contrast, as is the royal shield; a high sharp rim fronted by crisp beads outlines each side; the surfaces are highly reflective; best of all, perhaps, the vivid iridescent toning is a rich bluish gold with some violet hues, and smooth. Mintage figures for this set remain unknown but informed estimates put the number struck of this proof-only crown at between 150 and 225 pieces. Most seen today are impaired by careless handling over the past 188 years. The coin offered in this lot is one of the most appealing we have seen. A treat to study and to own! From The Formosa Collection

Estimate: 9000-12000 USD
