George IV gold Proof £5 1826, S-3797, KM702, Bare Head, raised lettered SEPTIMO edge, as issued in the sets, PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, classified as choice by the certifiers, and indeed this is an exceptionally fine example of the largest gold coin struck in modern times; it is also the first Five Pound coin type struck other than patterns a few years previously. Taking a closer look under a glass, the faint hairlines surrounding the king's portrait exist alongside trivial ticks in the soft gold and a few faint scratches. Nonetheless, the orange-peel texture of the fields remains intense, as does the mirror-like reflectivity of the luster, the portrait is set off by a cameo contrast against the field, and so is the lovely frosted regal shield on the reverse. The reverse in fact offers superb eye-appeal, while the obverse is decidedly above average. Only 150-225 pieces were struck for the special proof sets issued this year, celebrating the new portrait so favored by the king.

Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
