George IV gold Proof £5 1826, S-3797, KM702, Bare Head, raised lettered SEPTIMO edge, as issued in the sets, uncertified, a Brilliant Proof with some abrasions and light scuffs and hairlines on the obverse field, the reverse very choice, the fields deeply mirrored and evincing the classic orange-peel texture of a proof strike, the portrait and shield both frosted -- all in all, above average for this rare piece, with a mintage no higher than 225 pieces. Chantrey's effort to transform his marble bust of the king into this metallic version must surely have pleased his majesty, but so must the splendidly conceived and engraved royal shield on the reverse, by Jean Baptiste Merlen. Don't let the lack of certification stop you from bidding on this classic rarity.
