Great Britain
George IV gold Proof £5 1826, S-3797, KM702, Bare Head, raised lettered SEPTIMO edge, as issued in the sets, Genuine Proof, "Smoothed - UNC Details" PCGS, still highly reflective but it has been skillfully burnished and some small marks are to be seen, mainly on the obverse. The familiar story is that the king was displeased by the portrayal of his royal visage as it first appeared on his coinage in 1821, known today as the Laureate Head, and that he directed mint officials to employ the sculptor Francis Legett Chantrey to model a bust for the coinage based on the artist's marble bust which the king so admired. The result was the portrait seen here.
