Great Britain
Victoria gold Sovereign 1855, S-3852D, KM736.1, Young Head, "WW" incuse, MS65 NGC, a superb coin having glowing prooflike fields, a full strike, sensational surfaces, and just about the best color possible on a gold sovereign. Despite prices given in the SCBC, this is a rare date, seldom found in MS. Not so noted on the grading insert but this is the Millennia Collection coin, and before that in the collection of Jacob Y. Terner, MD. The cataloguer purchased this coin for Dr. Terner from London dealer Richard Lubbock in 1987 for $525. Mr Lubbock stated at the time that it was the favorite sovereign of all time of his father, Reginald Lubbock, who had maintained a coin shop on Regent Street for many years. Presumably it had been in his personal collection and was sold by his son only after he had passed away. And now, here it is -- all protected in plastic and yours, not after a long hunt in England, but simply by placing a winning bid.
Estimate: 6000-7000 USD
