Great Britain
Victorian plush cases, a desirable pair: 1839 for the Coronation Proof Set and 1893 for the silver Proof Set -- no coins, just the boxes. The 1839 case has sunken insets for 15 coins, to hold all the coins from this rare set, Farthing through gold £5, and it is made of dark-brown-covered pebbly leather with blue velvet and white silk inner pieces, a double hinge on the top, latch opposite, and a hook-lock on each of the other sides; it is intact and choice on the outside with working hinges, while the inside shows some nicks or flecking in the velvet and is a bit off in color. Very rare! We had a finer box in our Sale #3026, September 2013, which sold for thousands of dollars. The second case here is of fine red leather with sunken insets for 10 coins, not labeled but most likely for the 1893 silver Proof coins, with maroon velvet base and brown silk inside the top lid labeled in gilt Spink & Son, etc. Its hinges and latch work, and the case is choice overall. With so many coins now residing in plastic slabs, these cases may seem redundant but the fact is that many, many collectors find them appealing, and some keep their Proof or other coins in these cases -- oh, those traditionalists! This is indeed a desirable lot!

Estimate: 2500-5000 USD
