Guatemala
Ferdinand VI Proclamation 4 Reales Medal 1747, Medina-24, Betts-345. Very Good, Holed. 12.88 gm. Much of the edge design (similar to the pillar coinage) apparent. Obverse: bust of Ferdinand VI facing right, with legend FERD . VI . D . G . HISPAN . ET . IND . REX . around. Reverse: Coat of arms of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala (now Antigua Guatemala), with legend GUAT . IN . EIUS . PROCLAMATIONE . 1747 . around. Although the few first round silver issues of issued in Guatemala in 1733 had an edge design in accordance with the Seville 1728 Royal Ordinance, these round coins were almost immediately discarded for the well-known ones struck on irregular planchets. However, by 1747 a mint press and machine edge equipment were ready at that mint as evidenced by the edge design on the series of 1747 proclamation medals (and the existence of a round 2 Reales dated 1742). This is by far the rarest denomination for that series, of which about 10 specimens are known in all grades. Ex. John J. Ford collection (Stack's 1/2006, lot 626 for $1,600).From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins

Estimate: 1000-1500 USD
