Carlos III Pillar 8 Reales 1765 G-P, KM18, Cal-93. AU50 NGC. Some luster remaining, particularly on the pillar side, and well struck. Light adjustment marks and weakness on the shield, but beautiful old golden toning. 147,050 pieces minted. A wonderful specimen of the key date to complete the Guatemala Charles III 8 Reales series. The only date missing in the Patterson group (Bonhams 7/1996). Amat's specimen was an ugly Fine, while Haberthuer was almost Extremely fine. Described as the second finest specimen by Freeman Craig when sold by him to I. Rudman, and that statement might well remain accurate. Note that Sedwick recently sold a VF specimen of this rarity (10/2013, lot 327) for $3500. A prize of the I. Rudman collection and worthy of serious bidding. Ex. Freeman Craig (5/1984, lot 358 for $2600); previously ex. Calbeto (his plate coin) and ex. Ray Johnson. From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins
Estimate: 5000-7500 USD
