Ferdinand VII gold Prize Medal ND (circa 1816), Choice VF or Extremely Fine for wear, but tooled surfaces and with a file mark on the edge. Oval flan with King bust on the obverse and legend "EL PREMIO DE LA FIDELIDAD DE LAS AMERICANAS" on the reverse. Medina (Med. Proc. pp. 234-235) plates a similar medal and hints at a possible 1810 date and a Guatemala origin for it. This cannot be as we know the Ferdinand VII punches reached the Guatemala mint in 1811. The cataloguer points instead to the fact that Ferdinand VII created the "Premio a la Fidelidad de las Americanas" shortly after the "Real Orden Americana of Isabel la Catolica" which was destined to all women of the Americas who had shown special loyalty towards him during the Napoleonic Wars. The legend on the reverse of the medal is a convincing match. Extremely rare with as few as three confirmed specimens. Ex. Heritage (5/2009, lot 21333 for $3,000).From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins
