Guatemalan Proclamation of Iturbide gold Escudo Medal 1822, Grove 36/34 muling. AU58 NGC. With luster and orange-reddish toning, gently cleaned long ago and a small nick on the "G" on the reverse. Obverse: Naked bust of Augustin Iturbide facing left, AUGUST . 1 . EMP . DE MEXICO around, . 1822 . below. Reverse: coat of arms of Guatemala city above 26 DE (monogram) DIC . DE 1822 . 2 sup o /sup DE LA INDEP . in four lines within wreath, GUAT . EN LA PROCLAM . DE SU 1 sup r /sup . EMP . around. This was the nicer of the two specimens in the Eliasberg collection. A rare Mexican proclamation issued in Guatemala prior to the secession of Central America from the Iturbide empire on July 1823 with only a few surviving specimens struck in gold. Ex.
